Mole Removal Methods: Surgical and Non-Invasive Procedures Explained

A mole is a very common growth on the skin that most adults have. Some may have been around since birth and others develop later, often in areas that are exposed to the sun. At North County Dermatology Center in Encinitas, CA, our dermatology team, Dr. David Thomas, Dr. Margaret Hobson Dupree, and Dr. Camille Henninger will provide the answers and the care that you require.

Most moles don't require any treatment. If they become irritated by rubbing on your clothing, or if you find them unattractive you may want to get rid of them.

Surgical Excision

With a surgical excision, a scalpel removes the mole. The area is first cleaned, and then it is numbed with an anesthetic injected around the area of the mole. The mole is cut out then the skin is stitched together. The amount of tissue removed depends on the type of mole and whether it may be cancerous. The mole is sent for examination to determine if there is any reason for concern.

Shaving

Depending on the type of mole that you have, it may be able to be removed by shaving. A scalpel is used by the dermatologist to remove the mole one layer at a time. This can only be used for moles that are above the skin, if it goes below the skin it needs to be dug out and stitched, so shaving won't be enough. The shaving is less invasive and leaves less of a scar. Local anesthesia will be used.
